Family Photography at Storrs Hall, Windermere
Storrs Hall is one of the best family photography locations on Windermere. Gardens running down to the lake shore, a private jetty and views across to the fells. This session was for a Nepalese family who'd travelled up from the south of England, with their two daughters in formal outfits.
Why Storrs Hall Works for Family Photography
The grounds give you everything in one spot: open lawn, mature trees for shade, and lake frontage without the crowds you get at busier spots on Windermere. Formal outfits photograph particularly well here, the honey-coloured stone and grounds give the shots a bit more structure than a standard park or garden session.
How the Session Went
We started near the hall for the composed shots, the two girls together, then the full family, then the parents on their own. Worth doing these first, while outfits are still crease-free.
From there we moved down to the water. This is where things loosen up and that's usually where the best frames come from. I stay back with a longer lens and let it happen rather than directing every shot.
Finished up on the water as the light dropped, good colour on the lake, fells turning blue-grey behind it.
What to Bring
Layers. It's cooler by the water than up at the hall.
Spare shoes for formal wear. Dress shoes are great for the portraits near the hall, but pack boots, pumps or trainers for the grass and shoreline.
Extra time. Storrs Hall has enough variety in the grounds to be worth a longer session don't rush it.
