How to elope legally in England?
Eloping in the UK is simple, but there are a few key things to consider:
- Marriage License & Legalities – You’ll need to give notice at a registry office at least 29 days before your ceremony. A legal marriage must take place at a licensed venue with two witnesses. Or, you can do the legal part separately and have a symbolic ceremony anywhere—more freedom, same love!
- You'll need to be 18 or older. ·Not already married or in a civil partnership. And of course, not to be closely related.
- Witnesses – A legal wedding requires two witnesses. If you’re keeping it intimate, I can help arrange this.
- Celebrant (Optional) – For outdoor elopements, consider a humanist or independent celebrant who can create a personalised, meaningful ceremony. Happy to offer recommendations.
- Location and Permits – Most locations in the Lake District, Scotland, and Wales are free to use, but some areas (like National Trust land) may require permission—don’t worry, I can help with this!
- Weather-Ready Attire – The UK is unpredictable! Bring layers, good shoes (hiking boots can look amazing!), and stylish accessories like brollies, shawls, or even a cosy wool coat.
- Flowers - these can really add to the occasion, consider sourcing something wild and local to go with the scenery
- Accessories - vow books, veils, hand fasting ribbons, champagne or a hip flask, musician, vintage car - non are essential but it's your day and you can keep it simple or make it as elaborate as you like.
- Photography and Memories – You’re creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so make sure you have stunning photos to remember it forever—I’ll be there to capture every moment, whether it’s misty mountains, golden fells, or windswept coastlines.
Eloping should be stress-free, adventurous, and 100% about you—I’m here to help make it happen!

Where are the best places to elope in the UK?
The Lake District is one of the most breathtaking places to elope in the UK—think wild fells, serene lakes, and dramatic skies. Other stunning UK locations include Scotland’s rugged Highlands & Isle of Skye, Wales’ Snowdonia, and the Cornish coast for a seaside vibe.
I’m based in the Lake District but love to travel—Scotland is on my doorstep, and I’m always up for an adventure further afield!

Can we legally elope in the Lake District?
Yes! You can legally marry at a licensed venue or registry office, then head into the mountains, lakeshores, or forests for epic portraits. Some couples choose to do the legal part separately at a registry office, either locally at Kendal or Carlisle or elsewhere in the UK and then have a symbolic ceremony outdoors—more freedom, more adventure!

What’s the best time of year to elope in the Lake District?
Every season has its magic!
🍂 Autumn brings golden hues,
🌿 Spring is lush and fresh,
❄ Winter means cosy elopements with snow-dusted peaks
🌞 Summer offers long days and golden light.
Sunrise and sunset are always the best times for dreamy photos! Different locations suit different seasons, get in touch for advice.

What if it rains on our elopement day?
It’s the Lake District, so a little drizzle is part of the charm! Cloudy skies give dreamy soft light, and boots, brollies & puddle splashes make for fun, playful photos. For heavy rain, we’ll have a backup plan or reschedule if needed—no stress, just adventure!

How do we book an elopement photographer?
Easy! Get in touch, and we’ll chat about your dream location, date, and vision for the day. A 25% deposit secures your date, and I’ll send over a welcome guide with tips on styling, locations, and what to expect. From there we can chat through your timeline, whether it's a simple photos in one location or a narrative that covers your day together in a range of scenery.
Wherever you choose to elope—the Lakes, Scotland, the Alps, or even tropical beaches—I’ll be there to capture the magic.

Do we need witnesses for a UK elopement?
Yes, for a legal UK marriage, you need two witnesses. If you're keeping things intimate, I can help arrange witnesses. For symbolic ceremonies, no witnesses are required — just you, your love, and the landscape.

Can we have a wedding photoshoot in the Lake District even if we’re getting married elsewhere?
Absolutely! Whether you’re having a traditional wedding in the city, abroad, or just want extra epic portraits in the mountains, the Lake District is the perfect backdrop. Don't fancy hiking nana up a fell, many couples choose to re-wear their wedding dress and suit for a post wedding photo session.
